change of venue

I’m now leaving behind my rarely-updated weblog at this hard to type URL and joining forces with another defunct blog at the url http://2chan.us/wordpress/

hopefully this means less spam I have to moderate as well :(

C71, part THE FIRST

C71 is somewhat far off and there’re a few things that have caught my eye already, but the thing I wanted to show off to the internets was Omega no Shikai. The PV for it just came out (music by Onoken for all you rhythm game fans out there) and it looks like it has some potential to be a pretty fun game. From scanning the page, it looks like it’s another loli murder mystery, just the girls seem a lot more moemoe than Higurashi. I mean, eyepatch girl AND chinadress girl, how can you go wrong :3

In other doujin-related news, Diverse System is confirmed for C71 where they’ll be releasing D11, and you should all be on the lookout for South of Heaven’s Haruhi metal CD that should be released some time this month.

A little heads up and some tl notes

All of you visual novel fans, be on the lookout for the ef demo disc. Looks like it got released on the streets of Akiba yesterday, because nothing says that you are a true otaku like sitting in line for a visual novel demo disc instead of getting your PS3!

In other news, I’ve done a little translating (in between schoolwork and recovering from schoolwork) in the form of Bartender 1+2, Lirico part 1, and (gasp) Gakuen Alice 16.

Bartender was somewhat hard because of ridiculous monologues and people speaking somewhat politely. what the hell, Japan. :[ Good show, even though it might take a turn for the bizzare and nationalistic, so hats off to lunar for taking it up (and out of our hands).

Lirico 1 is some otakubeam doujin that was a little creepier than we initially thought. Considering that otakubeam is a fine purveyor of maid nazi loli porn, maybe our initial standards were a little too high. Oh well, we’ll probably do part 2 at some point in time, it seems slightly less creepy. I think it was actually the first written work I’ve fan-transed that was released into the wild. I still can’t tell if I had a somewhat hard time on it because I was tired while translating or because there were so few words that the story could have taken on a completely different meaning if I took a character’s words the wrong way. again, what the hell, Japan. >:(

Gakuen Alice we’ve been meaning to do forever (since this summer), but it took 3 months to get raws and it took a month for me to translate it and it took 2 months to get it cleaned up, so oops. Not much I can say about this other than I had a bizzarely hard time on the episode for it being x-men+harry potter for pedophiles. Hopefully the process will go slightly faster, but both members of the team are very busy with not failing classes/keeping gpas high enough to do a study abroad program. you want me to keep a 3.6? what the hell, college. >>:(

A heartbreaking post of staggering orz

Minutes ago, my entire world has been changed, and everything I thought I once knew has now been called into question.

The reason for this is that I have just realized that the man in these flash animations is not the Duke himself, but instead he is Gonorego.

I’d continue but I am too shattered to continue typing, orz

by the way, I have intentions to update in the near future (my con season wrapup, maybe some manga reviews) but at the moment I have a full raid schedule midterms.

Additive properties of moe

ULTIMATE FUCKING. ULTIMATE MOE.

Yes, it is exactly what you think it is, if you can’t read Japanese.

Starting school and thoughts on recent fansub “drama”

Since I’m starting college and I don’t know how much of a big scary place it will be, along with how terrible my workload is going to be (freshman taking japanese 401 lol), don’t expect much from this blog in the near future. not like you expected much from it to begin with, but just in case.

Also, this whole DarkMirage getting flamed for trashing Doremi all seems blown way out of proportion. Of course, this is both the internet AND fansubs, so I guess I even deserve to get the e-snot beaten out of me whenever I say “lol chinasub” when someone mentions doremi. Doesn’t stop me from getting their releases, though. On a similar note, Shin-Getter finished Ideon, so I’ll be grabbing that and hoping for distilled excellence.

Anyone in Japan that wants to buy me this I would love you FOREVER and I would pay you back too.

Fallout, round 1

Well, it looks like c70 is already making it down the distro chain to good-ol’ American bittorrent, which puts me in a tight spot (actually, the bt stuff is invaluable right now as my computer with share blew its power supply right about the time that non-faked c70 files started to show up on share). In all honesty, I’m very tempted to talk about and review some of the fallout, but somehow it doesn’t feel right to me - I’ve always felt bad when it comes to building e-fame off of straight-up piracy. I rationalize fansubs to the common excuse of “well it could help the series if it ever comes here, and I for one may buy it”, but if we’re talking about doujin that I don’t own that is easily available on bittorrent that would be hard or impossible for most non-Japanese to ever legitimately own, it seems like I am contributing absolutely nothing. My ethics are twisted, yes, as I don’t mind people stealing stuff (mrvacbob who currently has one of my external hard drives can attest to this), but much like how most people object to bootleg dvds for cash, something just irks me about piracy for hits/idlers.

(I really need to work on my run-on sentences if I ever plan on doing well in college.)

Anyway, yeah, I guess that’s my excuse for no c70 reviews in the near future. I might consider digging into my own physical collection and doing some more obscure circle highlights and media reviews, since I feel somewhat entitled as a consumer to review the product.

Oh well. Since I’m writing this on the fly, still in bed, really having to pee, please pick out any and all logical fallacies you see here so I can clumsily defend myself. (another call for comments, I’m shameless!)

damn, still another hour until my mosaic.wav single is done…

More fantasy Comiket

If any of you comiketters were planning on skipping day 2: DON’T! If not just for the industry booths, you have a few spillover panels (Chocolate Shop!) as well as some great odds and ends, and also something like over a hundred Marimite circles! You can’t go wrong!! Again, if you want to chat about the list, please leave a comment or talk to me on irc or something.

Now excuse me, I’m sleepy and my main computer is very close to being a smoldering pile of junk after my house was hit by lightning so I’m going to go to sleep before things get any worse.

odds and ends

Comiket starts in less than 12 hours, so I feel like I must say good luck to all 2 of my blog visitors that are going! In addition, they have probably already seen what I highlighted out of the catalogue, and if they haven’t, it’s probably too late, but here’s my day 1 catalogue CSV. Hopefully, I’ll work on 2+3 today. If you have any questions (RK WHY DID YOU MARK THAT FULL METAL ALCHEMIST YAOI CIRCLE) feel free to comment. Actually, feel free to comment in general, only having linkbacks to some random blog aggregator makes me feel lonely. :( Anyway, I hope you all have a bountiful Comiket without a drop of rain seen.

Congratulations to Patrick Macias for having his book Otaku in USA hit top 30 on .jp Amazon rankings! I know I’d certainly buy a copy in English if a publisher for the thing is ever found, but I might even go ahead and try to secure a Japanese copy.

Finally, an update to an earlier story: A demo for Unlimited Mahjong Works is out!

ADD, 11:30am: I forgot to mention, 2 big releases yesterday for PS2: Melty Blood Act Cadenza, and Simple 2000 Series 105: THE Maidfuku to Kikanjyuu (The Maid clothes and machine gun) I think I know which one is a better game, but who can resist maidfuku AND machine guns?

Nerdery and consumption, more often of the Japanese persuasion than not.
